This session is relevant for teachers, instructional coaches, speech language pathologists, school leaders, and other staff interested in learning more about the Science of Reading (SoR). Recent media coverage, state legislation, and advocacy groups have emphasized the importance of using evidence-based practices rooted in the SoR. For some, this term and others (e.g., structured literacy) may seem confusing and unclear. This professional learning session will demystify the SoR, making it understandable for educators and administrators. Dr. Stevens will also describe how to support students’ content-area reading comprehension (i.e., English language arts/reading, science, and social studies) using evidence-based practices before, during, and after reading. We will discuss this specifically for students experiencing reading difficulty across educational settings (i.e., whole-class instruction and small-group intervention). She will answer the following questions:
- What is the SoR? Within this, what is structured literacy?
- What are some misconceptions about the SoR?
- Is the SoR only about phonics?
- How can teachers support reading for understanding across the elementary, middle, and high school grades?
- How can teachers support reading comprehension by aligning instruction across core and supplemental instruction?
