Current University Chapters in Kansas
University of Kansas Faculty advisor to the University of Kansas’ Student CEC chapter is Dr. Lisa Didion.
The University of Kansas successfully revived its student chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) last year, recruiting 14 members and hosting monthly meetings. The chapter launched its programming with an expert panel addressing current and pressing issues in special education. Throughout the year, meetings focused on topics such as supporting positive behavior, practicing self-care, and navigating trauma. The year concluded with a special panel featuring graduating seniors from the Elementary Education Unified (EEU) and Unified Early Childhood (UEC) programs, who shared insights and advice with undergraduates interested in pursuing special education. Additionally, seven student members attended the CEC national conference in Baltimore. Chapter president and graduating senior Jackalynn Woelfel reflected on the year, stating: “Being a part of KU’s chapter of SCEC has been an eye-opening experience. Through the plethora of meetings, extensive learning opportunities, and abundance of connections I’ve made, I’ve come to learn far-reaching strategies, how to advocate, and about the breadths and depths of special education research. I’m ecstatic to begin my journey in teaching and continue my learning through CEC!” If you are interested in supporting KU’s SCEC chapter, check out our merchandise designed by the students at the following link: https://www.bonfire.com/store/ku-scec-teacher-merch/
Pittsburg State University Faculty advisor to the University of Kansas’ Student CEC chapter is Dr. Ashley Shaw.
Now in its sixth year, Pittsburg State University’s student chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children continues to make a meaningful impact by connecting preservice educators to the field and community. Through hands-on experiences, monthly meetings, and volunteer opportunities, the organization provides future teachers with invaluable exposure to the world of inclusive education.
The chapter hosts monthly meetings, where members engage with guest speakers, share resources, and build professional networks. Over the years, they have organized teacher, related service providers, and parent panels to offer firsthand insights into the challenges and successes exceptional learners experience. Additionally, the chapter is active in the local community, volunteering at local school STEM nights, trunk-or-treats, and providing resources to students in need during the holidays. These outreach efforts give preservice educators real-world experience in engaging with students and families while supporting local schools.
